Textual Sources for the Study of Judaism
Published in Paperback by St Martins Press (01 January, 1984)
Author: Phillip S Alexander
Average review score:

A classic introduction to Jewish studies from the master
Philip Alexander, Professor of Post-Biblical Jewish Literature at Manchester University and Co-Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies, external examiner for Oxford and Cambridge and consultant to Tel Aviv,is probably the greatest non-Jewish scholar of Jewish history and literature since the time of Wycliffe and other classical christian Hebraists. His encyclopaedic knowledge of the Hebrew Bible, Midrash, Talmud, Targum, Mishna, Kabbalah, later rabbinic commentaries and modern history is truly awe inspiring. Recognised as a supreme scholar by everyone from Roshei Yeshivot to radical contemporaries, Prof. Alexander's innate modesty and kindness have prevented him from enjoying the international recognition he deserves. He has translated some important Dead Sea Scrolls and is about to produce a new edition of one of the most esoteric books of the Bible. Undergraduates on any course in theology and religions can do no better than to read Alexander on Judaism. This book is a classic of how it should be done but seldom is.

There's a Monster in My House (Flap Books Series)
Published in Paperback by E D C Publications (April, 1997)
Authors: Jenny Tyler, Phillip Hawthorn, and Stephen Cartwright
Average review score:

Lift the flap book ideal for 2yr old children
A great simple book with clear graphics and a lift up on each page. Milly searches a house looking for a monster, but instead finds animals under blankets etc. - the flaps reveal what the monster really is each time. Needless to say she does find her monster in the end. Each page also has four common elements (e.g. a spider) for the child to look for. Excellent

Think Light!: Breaking Free from the Diet Prison

Authors: Greg Phillips and Gail Johnston

Think Light!: Breaking Free From the Diet Prison
This is one of the most concise books I've read about dieting and healthy eating and, believe me, I've read them all. The authors take the gobs of nutrition information that's out there and narrow it all down to seven simple habits. The seven habits are easy to incorporate into everyday living, including eating out. I'm losing weight, and I'm not depriving myself of any of my favorite foods. If only I knew it could be this simple!

A gorgeous centerfold display of a selection of her works accompanies pages of detail which are intricate and insightful, filled with drama and facts. The result is a comprehensive coverage of a lesser-known artist who deserves a place in history.

Tibullus: Poems
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (March, 1983)
Author: Phillip Dunlop
Average review score:

Interesting Translation Helped Me with Reading the Latin
I bought this long out-of-print Penguin Classic of Tibullus' poems (trans. Philip Dunlop, 1972). I have enjoyed using it along side my Loeb edition of Tibullus (with Latin and English facing translations) as it helped give me one more interpretation of the Latin. Dunlop is (was?) one of those British schoolteachers of a previous generation who seemed to once make so many translations of ancient poets available to general readers. I recommend digging this up and using it along side the Loeb Tibullus (in the Loeb Library, Tibullus is included in the volume of Catullus, by the way) and also with Guy Lee's version, also called Tibullus, published by Francis Cairns.

Tiger Is a Scaredy Cat
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Author: Joan Phillips
Average review score:

A perfect book for beginning readers!
This is a heart-warming story of a kitten with many fears. He overcomes his fears in the story because of his compassion for a smaller, more needy animal than himself. Through repetition in the text beginning and emerging young readers will find this a delightful, easy-to-read story. My daughter has read it so many times the cover and pages are worn with love! It was the first story she mastered reading cover to cover.

Average review score:

Great wit and a keen sense of the human condition
Louis Phillips is an accomplished and seasoned poet who writes his verse with great wit and a keen sense of the human condition. The Time, The Hour, The Solitariness Of The Place is his latest collection showcases a poet who uses words and paper the way an artist uses paint and canvas to evoke a recognition and reflection within the mind's eye of the reader. Cantrip: Sleep lively now/While I mortal weave/About your breathing/Hush now sounds,/Your world displaced/Where now the night/Imprints & now/The wind. Breathe/Yourself thru/This forest of sighs,/Gorgeous the moon/Pranking round hollow,/Now to awake./The spell is broken/& yes you are free.

To Save Bastogne
Published in Paperback by Borodino Books (January, 1996)
Author: Robert F. Phillips
Average review score:

To Save Bastogne - One reader's review
A first-hand account of the first days of The Battle of The Bulge. Robert Phillips is a surviving member of the 110th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. Mr. Phillips also had a distinguished career as a military historian after the war. This book is well-written and has enough maps to provide perspective, along with some pictures. It provides detail not found elsewhere about the delaying action fought by the 28th Division, particularly the 110th Infantry and the 687th Field Artillery, to buy time for the defenders of Bastogne. Recommended for all readers who have a sense of history.
